Although there are recordings of a crude game of football in China 2000 years ago, it was in England where football began to take the shape we now recognise. In the early 19th century the football field was the length of the town! Then on October 26 1863 the founding member clubs met at the Freemason's Tavern to form themselves into an association to be called 'The Football Association', and established "the laws of the game of football".

As early as 1872 saw the first official Football International, played between England and Scotland. Then in 1877 the Football Association Challenge Cup was introduced, which even today remains the greatest club knockout competition in the world. The greatest revolution in English football was the formation of the Premier League, won for the first time in 1992-3 by Manchester United who have since dominated the Premier League. However in 2002 Arsenal became champions, with Liverpool finishing runners-up.
